A flashlight, perched in an office plant, blinks the phrase "At present I am a sojourner in civilized life again” - an opening line from Henry David Thoreau’s "Walden" - in Morse code. This work subtly muses on the complex role that the nature/artifice divide has played in shaping the post-industrial world. Jumping off from Thoreau's admission, in the very opening paragraph of “Walden,” that his triumphant voyage into the woods eventually led him back to the city that he sought to escape, this work wryly probes the confused, fraught, and ultimately unresolved fantasies that connect natural and urban worlds.
